Cutlery, chalices, jugs, boxes, and other silver objects could receive these engravings — and were often made specifically for a particular family.
The coat of arms functioned almost like a visual identity: it could indicate who the piece belonged to, the family lineage, and, in certain contexts, the social status of the owner.
And there was also a very practical reason: in a house with dozens of silver pieces, an engraving helped to identify family property.
When the piece was inherited, the object could continue to circulate between generations, carrying with it the name and history of that family.
